Location: north of Fairbanks, Alaska to the Arctic Ocean
Length of visit: multiple days
Major draws: Scenic views, wildlife, oil pipeline
Strenuosity: 0 out of 10
Additional considerations: Rental cars barred by contract, few services, heavy semi traffic
Description: Despite its reputation as a window-chipping, tire-eating gravel track, the 414-mile “Haul Road” to Prudhoe Bay is intermittently paved, including one nice section that passes the Arctic Interagency Visitor Center in Coldfoot. There are waysides with interpretive signs along the route north and we’ll next write about our favorite at the Arctic Circle.
