Chilkoot Trail—Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park
Location: 9 miles drive west of Skagway, Alaska
Length of visit: multiple days
Major draws: Historic route of 1897 gold rushers, scenic views, waterfalls, glaciers
Strenuosity: 10 out of 10
Cost/Fees: $20.30 per person for U.S.-side only
Additional considerations: Reservations required to continue trail into Canada, passport required to cross international border
Description: During the winter of 1897-98, over 30,000 people hauled one-ton of food and gear per person over the 3,501-foot Chilkoot Pass. Most backpackers today go 33-miles one-way and shuttle back, but we did an in-and-out two-night trip using the empty Pleasant Camp as base and got to experience the famous Golden Stairs and their 100% slope in both directions.

  1. I am glad to hear that the trail is an outdoor museum b/c I was afraid that one of you were hiking without shoes….. Also, hiking in fog sounds scary to me but an amazing experience!
